Toronto Attractions

In Toronto, we have the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition), almost always referred to by locals as the "Ex". It runs from about the 20th August until labour Day. It is the world's oldest and largest annual exposition. It sits on 346 acres on Toronto's waterfront. It first opened in 1789. It runs for about 3 weeks each summer. It's end signals the start of school (Labour Day). Attendance has been declining but still draws well over one million visitors each year. It used to drew as many as 3 million.

In the photo, the CNE midway is foreground with downtown Toronto in the background and the CN Tower, tallest free-standing structure in the world until recently, on the right. Look how it dwarfs the office buildings, perhaps the tallest being some 80-something stories. The Tower is 1815 feet tall and was built 1974.

The midway boasts some 65 rides. Plenty of them are suited to younger kids.

There are some 25-30 buildings: attractions such as the automotive building, the food building where you can taste free samples, the agriculture building, which was at the CNE's roots, the better living centre, the hockey hall of fame, etc.

Each night during its run, a fireworks show is held at closing time. While it is impressive, it is nothing compared to the "Symphony of Fire", an annual international fireworks competition held at Ontario Place, another Toronto attraction, adjacent to the CNE. Imagine literally hours of the finest fireworks stagers in the world, all set to music. It is quite a spectacle.

One of the most popular attractions is held on the last weekend of the fair: The Toronto International Air show. Most of the acrobatics is done just south of the fairgrounds, over Lake Ontario.

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds are a world renown formation flying team. Here they are in diamond formation flying over Alcatraz, in San Francisco.

There are just too many other attractions to do justice to here, but just to name a few…

Caribana festival is a celebration of all things Caribbean. It attracts over a million visitors each year from every corner of the world.

The CN Tower at 1815 feet has a revolving restaurant and several observation decks, including a glass floor.

Here's a look at the distinctive Toronto skyline with the tower and stadium on the left. The photo was taken from Toronto Island, just across from the harbour.

Hockey hall of fame.

Science Centre.

Toronto Zoo boats hundreds of acres of animal sanctuaries.

Toronto is said to be the most ethnic city in the world, even more so than New York. As such, the variety of foods and restaurants is unsurpassed. Speaking of New York...the late, great Peter Ustinov once remarked "Toronto is like New York run by the Swiss". A local moniker is "Toronto The Good".

Ontario Place has numerous attractions including a cinesphere, water park, mini-golf, paddleboats, etc.

Canada’s Wonderland is a large theme park with about 20 roller coasters.

Depending on when you visit, you may want to take in a Major League Baseball game in our retractable dome stadium.
